Matt Henry, PhD

Understanding systems. Centering people. Planning futures.

I’m a researcher, facilitator, and strategist with a PhD in the Environmental Humanities working toward a just and livable future for all. My work lives at the intersection of energy, climate, and society, helping agencies, community groups, and infrastructure planners navigate the complex social and cultural landscapes shaping our shared futures. With deep experience in qualitative research, community engagement, and facilitation, I focus on the relationships, narratives, histories, and cultural politics that shape climate and energy decision-making.

I’m currently a Director at Gridworks, where I lead strategy and engagement efforts in the Interior West. Previously, I directed social science research projects and technical assistance initiatives at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and served as a teaching professor at the University of Wyoming, where I published a book and engaged Wyoming communities impacted by the coal transition.

Values & Approach

At the core of my work is a commitment to equity, transparency, and collaboration. I believe that meaningful progress on climate, energy, and infrastructure challenges depends on understanding diverse perspectives and the social contexts that shape decisions.

I design facilitation and research processes that are inclusive, reflective, and adaptive, creating space for all voices and fostering shared ownership of solutions.

Grounded in environmental humanities and social science, my approach is narrative-informed and place-aware: I listen deeply to stories, histories, and relationships to reveal the often unseen dynamics influencing community and policy outcomes.

Rooted in optimism and practical foresight, I help clients navigate uncertainty by building resilient strategies that honor complexity and cultivate just, sustainable futures.
